Evergreen Solar Declares Bankruptcy, Stops Production

In 2011, Massachusetts based Evergreen Solar declared bankruptcy, stopped making solar panels and its assets were sold at auction. Among the assets, the string ribbon technology and name were acquired by an investment group to form the new Evergreen Solar China. The latest ES-H and ES-E series modules, from 250 to 280 watts, have not received UL certification or California CEC approval.

Evergreen Solar Panel Replacement Compatibility

Replacing the popular ES-A series modules is difficult because they are not compatible with most contemporary solar panels. Specifically, the voltage and amps of Evergreen modules are not compatible with other brands. The maximum voltage of Evergreen ES-A modules is 16.5V to 16.8V, while the maximum voltage of nearly every other brand is 30V. While Evergreen modules operate at around 9 amps, standard modules operate at 11 Amps. Therefore, owners needing to replace Evergreen modules due to damage or failure are unable to mix other brands. They typically have to remove the non-working modules. To add more power a new system may be needed. The good news is that solar prices have dropped substantially, while power has improved.
