Solar Windows

A solar window uses photovoltaic technology to generate electricity for use in a home or office. The photovoltaic technology can be integrated into glass or be a transparent coating for solar glass and flexible plastics. Also known as BIPV, or building integrated photovoltaics, these products are still in laboratory development toward truly green buildings, with just a few test installations.

One notable test is the Solaria PowerView solar window installed in 2016 at a government GSA building in Kansas City, Missouri. This pilot is being done in collaboration with FlexLab and the GSA Green Proving Ground program to test performance, reliability, and safety of the green windows. The photo below shows the actual solar window installed at the GSA office. Note how the integrated solar cells are partially translucent, acting as a window shade. You can also see the wiring to the inverter below the window.
